About this book
A Ride for Martha follows three friends Ida, Lizzie, and Sarah who take turns carrying Martha on their backs as they journey to a clam supper on Saltspring Island around 1900. When the girls become exhausted and stop giving Martha rides, she faces a dangerous situation that underscores the risk of neglect. The book is set on Saltspring Island in the early 20th century and is written for early readers at a third-grade reading level.
