Description
When a young girl's father starts dating someone new, she immediately decides the woman is "totally uncool." The girlfriend plays the tuba, sings opera to her goldfish, and knows nothing about soccer or video games. As the story progresses, however, the girl discovers that this woman can keep secrets and make amazing Halloween costumes, and she starts to reconsider her first impressions.
Quick Summary
If your kid is dealing with a new stepparent or just navigating those tricky "not my favorite person" feelings, this little book hits differently. A girl lists out every single reason she thinks her dad's girlfriend is the worst her laugh, her cooking, everything and the complaints are so dramatic and funny that young readers will crack up, but there's a real moment where she realizes maybe this person isn't so bad after all. It's only 348 words and at a 1.8 reading level, so even reluctant readers or early graders can power through it pretty independently, which is always a win. Parents will appreciate that it doesn't preach or force a lesson it just lets the kid in the story figure things out on her own terms, which feels way more realistic for how these situations actually play out. For something in a similar vein with that blend of humor and heart, I'd point you toward "My Two Uncles" or anything by AJ Mason.
