Description

Bean is excited when a new kid named Sam moves in next door, and the two quickly become friends. Bean's dog Gus feels left out and refuses to have anything to do with them, showing jealousy over the new friendship. As the story unfolds, Gus must learn to cope with his feelings and eventually accept that there's room for more than one friend in Bean's life. A level-2.6 early reader, the book presents a straightforward story of friendship and dealing with jealousy for young children.

Quick Summary

If your kid is navigating the tricky feelings that come when a best friend finds a new playmate, this short early-reader delivers exactly that in a warm, funny way. Gus the cat watches his person Bean become best buddies with the new kid Sam, and his jealousy sparks a series of goofy mishaps knocking over the toy box, plotting secret "hide-and-seek" missions that keep the story moving without ever feeling heavy. The 629-word length and 2.6 AR level make it perfect for newly independent readers who want a story that feels like a real chapter book but doesn't overwhelm, and the gentle humor will appeal to kids who love a bit of silliness. Parents will appreciate that the jealousy is portrayed as a normal, solvable problem, and the resolution shows Gus learning that sharing Bean doesn't mean losing him. Think of it as a shorter, cat-centric cousin to the classic "Frog and Toad" friendship tales.
