About this book
Thirteen-year-old Patrick McWaid helps his family operate the paddle steamer Lady Elisabeth along Australia's Murray River in the 1860s. When his friend Jefferson leaves to work on the fancier Victoria steamer, Patrick and his family are left to transport two crates of ostriches that were left behind. The family pursues the Victoria to Emu Flat, where Patrick gets into serious trouble.
