Description
Department 19 Operator Jamie trains a new squad while an escapee from a maximum security prison sets out to expose the existence of vampires. Book #3.
Quick Summary
If you're into action-packed supernatural stories with real stakes, Department 19 is a series that keeps getting better with each book, and Battle Lines is probably the most intense one yet. Jamie, who's been through a lot at this point, takes on the role of training newer team members, which gives the story some fresh energy and reminds you that even heroes have to learn and grow. There's also a wild subplot with a prison escapee who's determined to reveal vampires exist to the world, and honestly, that character adds a whole new layer of tension that makes you want to keep reading way past bedtime. The action sequences are vivid without being gratuitously gory, and there's actually some solid character development happening beneath all the vampires-fighting-bad-guys stuff. Kids who loved the earlier books will appreciate how the relationships deepen, and if you liked the mix of military-style tactics and monster hunting in something like Maximum Ride, this has a similar vibe but way more detail and world-building. Parents should know it leans toward the serious side with some pretty scary moments, but it's balanced out by the loyalty and humor between the characters that makes you actually care about them.
