About this book
Twelve-year-old Mieka Baker and her artist father leave Boston to spend the summer with her grandmother in Texas after the elderly woman has a heart attack. Mieka has never met her grandmother before, who is brutally honest and critical of Mieka's appearance. During her stay, Mieka meets her cousins and their family, which makes her reflect on what "normal" means to her. The story explores themes of family, identity, and belonging.
