Description

When Josh Flunk and his friend Spencer Topps discover a flashing ivory skull on an old walking stick, they uncover a hidden trapdoor beneath Josh's bed that leads to an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus. By stepping through, they become Zac Zoltan, master detective, and his sidekick Dr Brains, ready to tackle any threat. The pair soon learns that biting the legendary chocolate amulet has awakened the sinister Chocolate Vampires, who once terrorized the mythical Chocolate Age. Now they must race against time to stop these sugary undead from wreaking havoc on the modern world.

Quick Summary

If you're looking for a quick, goofy read that kids will actually finish, this is a solid choice. The premise alone that chocolate-loving vampires from a mysterious Chocolate Age get unleashed when someone bites into an ancient chocolate amulet is ridiculous enough to hook even the most reluctant readers, and the jokes keep coming throughout. It sits right at a 6th-grade reading level but reads fast (the whole thing is under 11,000 words), making it perfect for kids who want something fun without committing to a giant novel. There's a bit of spooky action as the vampires cause chaos, but it stays lighthearted and silly rather than genuinely scary, so it works well for younger middle-graders who like mild thrills. Parents will appreciate that it sneaks in a little bit of history about real prehistoric ages while keeping everything absurd. Fans of books like "The Last Kids on Earth" or anything by Dav Pilkey will probably gravitate toward this one for its humor and fast-paced chaos. It's the kind of book that makes reading feel like a treat rather than a chore.
