Quick Summary
If your kid loved the first two books in this series, they're in for a real treat with the third installment and even if they're just jumping in, Browne makes it easy to catch up. After bouncing between the present and Arthur's time, Dan and Ursula accidentally end up in 878 AD right in the middle of a full-blown Viking invasion, which immediately raises the stakes in a way that feels exciting rather than confusing. What makes this one stand out is how it mixes real history (think "Vikings meet Anglo-Saxon England") with the time-travel adventure the series is known for, and the kids actually have to use their wits rather than just stumble through there's a satisfying sense that they're growing as characters. The humor is still there (Browne never takes herself too seriously), but there's also genuine tension and some moments that hit harder emotionally than you might expect from a middle-grade adventure. Reluctant readers tend to breeze through this one because the chapters are short and punchy, and the "what if I got stuck in the wrong era" premise is inherently gripping. Parents will appreciate that it's historically informative without feeling like homework, and there's enough action to keep even kids who typically zone out during reading glued to the page. If your kid is into time travel, historical fiction, or stories where ordinary kids end up in extraordinary situations, this is a solid pick it holds its own next to something like the "I Survived" series but with more humor and heart.
