Description

Fourteen-year-old Ishmael Leseur begins ninth grade at a new school, expecting more of the same torment he's endured for years from classmate Barry Bagsley, who mocks his unusual name. When James Scobie arrives and claims to have had his fear removed during a medical operation, he befriends Ishmael and helps him find the courage to stand up to bullies. Together with their classmates, the boys navigate the challenges of adolescence, including dealing with school bullies, a disastrous class project on Moby Dick, and learning what it means to be brave.

Quick Summary

"Don't Call Me Ishmael" turns the classic Moby-Dick reference into a hilarious tale of a teenager who believes his ridiculous name is the reason he gets bullied, but discovers that standing up for himself might be the real adventure. Kids will laugh out loud at Ishmael's witty inner monologue and cheer as he finds an unexpected friend who helps him face down the school bully in a way no one saw coming. If your kid loves the humor and heart of "Diary of a Minecraft Wolf: Nether Ghost a Minecraft Wolf: Nether Ghost Wimpy Kid" or the underdog spirit of "The Outsiders," they'll absolutely devour this story about finding your voice. Perfect for kids in grades 5 through 8 who enjoy funny, feel-good stories about friendship and standing up to bullies.
