Description

Every morning Mr. Nick rides the seven o'clock train into the city with his friend Mrs. Jolley, and the two spend the ride knitting and laughing together. When Mrs. Jolley suddenly isn't on the train and Mr. Nick learns she's in the hospital, he worries about her and decides to act. He then knits a special, cozy gift to cheer her up and bring a smile back to her.

Quick Summary

This is one of those sweet, understated stories that sticks with you long after you close it. The book follows Mr. Nick and Mrs. Jolley, two regulars on the morning train who knit together and clearly love each other's company but one day Mrs. Jolley isn't on the train, and Mr. Nick learns she's in the hospital. What I love is what happens next: instead of just feeling sad, Mr. Nick picks up his needles and knits her something special to cheer her up, showing that you can turn worry into something tangible and loving. It's a gentle story about friendship, problem-solving, and the idea that our hobbies can actually help the people we care about. Kids who enjoy cozy stories about community, anyone who's dealt with a loved one being sick, or young readers who have a crafty grandparent will especially connect with this one. The whole thing is only about 800 words, so it's a quick read that still has real emotional weight perfect for early readers who want something with more substance than a picture book but aren't ready for chapter books yet.
