Description
When Ben's father, a robotics expert, has to go away for a work trip during Ben's short break, he sends a special robot called a robopop to keep Ben company. The robot is designed to mimic a dad, but living with a machine proves tricky as Ben deals with its limitations and his own feelings about his father's absence. As the holiday goes on, Ben must figure out how to trust his new mechanical caretaker while learning what it really means to have someone look after him.
Quick Summary
If your kid loves robots, humor, or stories where things go hilariously wrong, Robopop is a quick and fun pick. Ben's dad builds him a robot nanny to keep him company over half-term, and the robopop named Pop ends up causing absolute chaos in the most entertaining ways, from misinterpreting simple instructions to accidentally becoming the most popular kid in school. It's one of those stories where you can see the disaster coming but can't help laughing anyway, and kids who enjoy Diary of a Wimpy Kid or The Bad Guys will probably feel right at home. At just under 11,000 words with a 3.6 reading level, it moves fast and never gets bogged down, making it a great choice for reluctant readers who want something funny and fast-paced without feeling babyish. There's a sweet thread running through the story too, since underneath all the robot mishaps, it's really about Ben missing his dad and figuring out what family really means even when that family includes a well-meaning but utterly disaster-prone machine. Parents can feel good about this one: it's wholesome, lighthearted, and gets kids excited about reading without any iffy content to worry about.
