Quick Summary
If you're looking for a fun fantasy adventure that Middle Graders can really sink their teeth into, this one's for you. Lance Lo heads off to Camp Claw expecting typical summer training, but things take a wild turn when the camp gets attacked and he and his friends suddenly have to step up with their dragons to protect everything. The action moves at a quick pace and the dragon dynamic gives kids something to really root for there's humor mixed in with the more intense moments, so it balances out the mild violence mentioned. Kids who loved series like Dragon Masters or Wings of Fire will find plenty to like here, especially if they enjoy stories where ordinary kids become unlikely heroes. Parents can feel good about the message of friendship and courage, and while there are some action-packed, slightly scary scenes, they never feel too heavy for the target age group. It's a solid first book in what looks like a promising series, and by the end you'll definitely want to pick up the next one to see what happens next.
