Description

Ruth Keller is a fearless middle-grade journalist who won't back down from a fight. When she spots an odd black slime creeping into the man-made lake in her suburban neighborhood, she decides to investigate, convinced that the wealthy owner of the local country club is behind the pollution. With the support of friends and family, Ruth follows the clues, faces down powerful adults, and risks everything to expose the secret threatening her town.

Quick Summary

Ruth is a middle schooler who stumbles onto something suspicious in her town, and "The Leak" follows her as she decides to chase the story no matter what even when it gets weird and a little scary. It's a quick read at under 8,000 words, but Ruth's voice feels real and determined, and the mystery has enough twists that kids actually want to keep turning pages. If your kid loves Kid Detectives or anything with a smart protagonist who won't give up, this will hit the spot. There's also a nice message about truth and standing up for what's right without it feeling preachy. The pacing is tight, which makes it great for reluctant readers who want something they can finish in a sitting or two. Parents will appreciate that it's wholesome but genuinely thrilling there's a bit of tension and danger that makes it exciting without being inappropriate for the age group. Think of it as a gateway mystery for kids who are ready for something slightly more complex than early chapter books but not ready for full YA yet.
