Quick Summary
If your kid loves adventure stories with magic and mythical creatures, this is a solid pick. Tom and Elenna are a fun duo who have to be brave and work together when an ancient snake-beast called Falkor gets awakened and someone uses his power for evil they have to venture into his lair to save their kingdom, which makes for plenty of tense, exciting moments without getting too dark for the middle-grade crowd. The writing is straightforward and fast-paced, so it works really well for reluctant readers who might feel intimidated by thicker chapter books, but the fantasy elements and short chapters keep things interesting enough that even kids who normally devour books will enjoy it. There's a good mix of action, a little bit of humor between the characters, and just enough danger to make the stakes feel real without crossing into anything too scary for the 4th-6th grade crowd. Parents will appreciate that it's a self-contained story (no cliffhanger ending pulling kids into a million-book series) while still having that satisfying adventure arc. If your kid liked "Dragon Masters" or "The Last Kids on Earth," they'll probably gravitate toward this one too.
