Description

After a violent storm leaves eleven-year-old Danny with the ability to hear the thoughts of plants and animals, he discovers his parents have vanished and must use his new powers to rescue them from the demonic Sammael.

Quick Summary

If your kid loves a good mystery with an edge, this one's got some serious hooks. Danny's world gets completely turned upside down when he wakes up after a massive storm to find his entire family vanished, and on top of that, he can suddenly hear the thoughts of a dying tree outside his window. It's a bit darker and grittier than typical middle grade there's some profanity and graphic violence so I'd say it's better suited for older middle schoolers rather than the younger end of the spectrum. What really sets this apart is the way the storm acts as this catalyst that changes everything, and Danny has to figure out what happened to his parents while also dealing with this strange new ability he never asked for. Kids who enjoyed Hatchet or The Wild Robot will probably dig this one too, since it's got that same survival and figuring-things-out vibe.
