About this book
Under Pressure follows the surprising 1864 Confederate raid on Saint Albans, Vermont, an attack that left the town in shock and set off a firestorm of political accusations. Using diaries, official reports, and court records, the author traces the legal fight that erupted when Union officials claimed Canada's handling of the captured raiders proved its support for the Confederacy. The narrative examines how this single incident strained U.S. Canada relations and intensified debates over foreign involvement in the Civil War.
