If a Tree Falls at Lunch Break

Kirsten and Walker, seventh-graders at an elite private school, alternate narrating this story about how race, wealth, weight, and other issues shape their relationships. Kirsten is struggling with her parents' deteriorating marriage and her best friend's betrayal, while Walker is trying to survive at a new school after his mother moved him from his old neighborhood. Their lives converge when they discover they are related, forcing both to confront difficult questions about identity and belonging.
