Description

Meet Mrs Vole, a dedicated vet who runs a bustling practice and cares for a house full of animals including three cats, four dogs, and her own three children. Though she works long hours and handles every case that comes her way, her children think she's missing something important in her life. Determined to find her a boyfriend, they hatch a series of matchmaking plans while she continues to tend to her furry patients. The story mixes gentle humor with a warm look at family dynamics as Mrs Vole balances her demanding career and her kids' well-intentioned matchmaking.

Quick Summary

Allan Ahlberg has a knack for packing lots of humor into very few words, and this little early reader is no exception. Mrs Vole the Vet is a quick, funny story about a mom who's so busy taking care of her animal patients that she never seems to relax and her kids decide the solution is to find her a boyfriend, which leads to some laugh-out-loud moments. It's one of those books where the illustrations (by Jessica Ahlberg, Allen's daughter) add as much to the story as the words do, with little details kids love to spot. This would be perfect for kids just getting into chapter books or early readers who enjoy silly family stories, and it works great as a read-aloud for younger kids too. Parents will appreciate that it's genuinely funny without being mean-spirited, and the whole "kids trying to fix Mom's love life" premise gives kids something to relate to and giggle about. If your kid already loves Ahlberg's "Each Peach Pear Plum" or the "Happy Families" series, this feels right at home with that same playful energy.
