Description

The novel follows young Catherine Morland, a naive and imaginative heroine who is invited to the fashionable town of Bath and then to the Tilney family home, Northanger Abbey. While there, her passion for Gothic novels leads her to suspect the Tilney family of dark secrets. She forms a romantic attachment to Henry Tilney but must learn to distinguish between fantasy and reality.

Quick Summary

Austen turns the wild Gothic thriller genre on its head with a heroine who sees vampires and conspiracies everywhere, making this a hilarious send-up of scary stories that rewards readers who love spotting the jokes. Kids will devour the witty social banter, root for clumsy Catherine as she stumbles through her first romance with the charming Henry Tilney, and laugh at the absurdity of her Gothic-fueled suspicions. If your kid loves the witty romance and misunderstanding-driven plots of "Clueless" or "Emma," they'll fall for this Regency-era version of overthinking a situation into comedy. Perfect for teens who enjoyed "Pride and Prejudice" or anyone ready for a smarter, funnier twist on the classic romance story, ideal for 9th through 12th graders with strong reading skills.
