Description

On a family camping trip, siblings Margaret and Artie become lost in the woods and are rescued by the superintelligent rats of NIMH, who welcome them into their hidden community. As winter approaches, the children must find a way back to their own world while keeping the rats' secret safe from human discovery. Their promise of silence is tested when questions from family and school become harder to evade, putting both the children and the rats at risk. The story follows Margaret and Artie as they struggle to protect the rats and themselves while navigating loyalty, secrecy, and survival.

Quick Summary

If your kid loved the original "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH" or any clever animal-team adventure, this sequel will feel right at home Racso, a quick-witted young rat, teams up with two curious kids who stumble onto his hidden valley, and together they must outwit poachers, avoid traps, and keep their secret community safe. The story balances light-hearted moments (the rats' inventive gadgets and the kids' goofy banter) with genuine tension as the group races against time to protect Thorn Valley, making it a good pick for readers who like a mix of humor and suspense. Parents will appreciate the positive messages about teamwork, problem-solving, and standing up for friends, while the occasional close-call and narrow escapes give the plot just enough edge to keep kids on their toes without being overly scary. It's a solid choice for middle-grade readers (roughly grades 4-8) who enjoy animal stories with a dash of science and a lot of heart, and it pairs nicely with books like "Watership Down" or the original NIMH tale for anyone looking for more rodent-filled excitement.
