Book three in the Blackthorn Key series.

Quick Summary

If you're looking for a book that'll keep middle graders turning pages well past bedtime, this third installment in the Blackhouse Pen series delivers. Christopher is that kind of protagonist kids can't help but root for he's got a knack for stumbling into trouble that ranges from puzzling coded messages to full-on assassin encounters, and his mix of wit and nervousness feels genuinely relatable. The story balances genuine tension with moments of humor, so while there's some scary stuff (assassins, danger, real stakes), it never gets too heavy for the age group. Kids who loved the first two books will be thrilled, and newcomers can jump in with just a little context. Think of it as a historical mystery with personality if your kid enjoyed books like The Mysterious Benedict Society or the Secret Series, they'll likely dig this one. Parents should know there's violence in the story, but it's more adventure-thriller than gratuitously scary, making it a good fit for readers ready to handle some tension.
