Description

Set against a striking two-world landscape of lake and sky, this atmospheric tale follows Jacob and his father, the only fishermen left on Lake Spetzia a lake that rose after a dam flooded their old town. The villagers whisper that the water is haunted, but Jacob stays because his mother lies buried beneath the surface. When he falls in love with the village girl Ellen, their happiness is threatened by the lake's ghostly inhabitants, and Jacob is drawn into the depths before their wedding day. The story weaves a haunting love story with the mystery of a cursed waterway, testing the limits of loyalty and loss.

Quick Summary

If you're looking for a quick, atmospheric ghost story that manages to be spooky AND sweet at the same time, this one really delivers. Jacob and his father stubbornly hold onto their fishing life on a lake that locals believe is haunted by the old town that was flooded to create it and what unfolds is part mystery, part tender father-son story. P.J. Lynch's writing has this quiet, almost melancholic beauty to it that makes the pages fly by despite the short length, and the spooky elements are genuinely eerie without being too scary for younger middle graders. This would be perfect for kids who enjoyed "The Bell Bandit" by Natalie Standiford or anyone who likes their ghost stories with a lot of heart. At just over 3,000 words, it's an easy one-sitting read, but the ending will stay with you a rare middle grade book that manages to be haunting in the best way.
