Description

When Travis Barkley's parents die in a car crash, he and his younger sister Amanda are separated and he grows up in the foster care system. Years later, a postcard from Amanda leads Travis to southern California, where he teams up with new friends to search for her. As Travis pursues his missing sister, he's also torn between reuniting with Amanda and pursuing a promising baseball career.

Quick Summary

If you're looking for a story that mixes family loyalty with some real heart-pounding moments, this one's a solid pick. Travis has spent years wondering where his little sister ended up after their parents' accident, and now he's willing to throw away a shot at his baseball dreams just to find her which tells you pretty quickly he's not the kind of main character who plays it safe. There's a lot of tension as he follows the clues, and some parts genuinely had me worried about what would happen next, but there's also enough baseball action and street-smart moments to keep things moving. Kids who love sports stories will appreciate the realistic details, while anyone who's ever worried about a sibling or dealt with hard family stuff will find something to connect with here. It's emotionally honest without being heavy-handed, which is a tricky balance a lot of middle-grade books struggle with. If your kid liked "The Best of Two" or stories where kids have to grow up fast while chasing something important, they'd probably click with this one.
