Description

New to Ambler, twins Jules and Josh face different challenges as Jules accidentally makes an enemy of Maggie while trying to fit in. Desperate for companionship, she adopts the class rabbit Chewie, but the rabbit falls seriously ill after a spay surgery. With Dr. Mac away, Jules must put aside her differences with Maggie and work together to save Chewie. This Vet Volunteers adventure shows how collaboration can help even the most unlikely friendships flourish.

Quick Summary

If your middle grader is nervous about starting somewhere new, Jules and Josh will feel like old friends. Jules really struggles to fit in at her new school she accidentally gets on the wrong side of the class queen bee, Maggie and you can practically feel her embarrassment on the page. The twist that makes this one memorable is Chewie, the class rabbit she adopts almost on impulse; what starts as a bid to feel better becomes something genuinely heartwarming as she figures out what friendship actually looks like (hint: it doesn't have to be perfect or popular). Josh's smooth adaptation in contrast creates natural sibling dynamics that'll make readers grin, especially when their differences lead to some genuinely funny sibling moments. Kids who loved "Frindle" by Andrew Clements or anything by Barbara Park will appreciate the humor and realness here, and reluctant readers often gravitate toward books under 40,000 words that move fast. There's nothing scary or heavy-handed just solid middle-grade storytelling about fitting in when you'd rather just belong. Parents can rest easy knowing this hits that sweet spot of funny and heartfelt without anything to worry about.
