Description

Upon his fathers death, Salem inherits a mansion as well as an unfinished battle with creatures from another world, which requires him to seek the help of his guardian familiar and the colorful performers of Dr. Kinoshita's Circus of Unearthly Delights.

Quick Summary

The artwork in this graphic novel is absolutely stunning all sharp blacks and clean whites that make every panel pop off the page like you're peering into someone's haunted dream. Salem inherits way more than a creepy mansion when his dad dies, and suddenly he's tangled up with monsters, magical guardians, and a circus full of performers who might just save his life. Kids who love mystery, a little spookiness, and stories where ordinary kids stumble into extraordinary situations will eat this up. There's humor here too, especially from the circus crew, which keeps things from getting too heavy even when the creatures get intense. At only 4,000 words, this reads quick and won't overwhelm reluctant readers or those intimidated by thicker books. Parents should know there's some genuine tension and scary imagery, but nothing that goes beyond what's appropriate for upper middle graders. If you liked The Graveyard Book or Amulet, this has that same blend of imagination and heart that makes you want to turn the next page.
