The story follows Marcus, a young Roman centurion, who travels beyond the Roman Wall into hostile northern Britain to uncover the fate of his father, who commanded the Ninth Legion. The Ninth Legion mysteriously vanished along with their eagle standard, and Marcus undertakes a dangerous quest to recover it. Set in ancient Britain during the Roman occupation, the novel depicts Marcus's encounters with native tribes as he seeks answers about his father's disappearance.
