Description

Sunny is a cheerful little girl who usually wears a big smile, but one morning she discovers that her smile has vanished. She searches through the house, checking her pockets, looking under Mr. Honeycomb's basket, and even wondering if the mischievous Glittergills have taken it. As she hunts for her missing smile, Sunny learns that happiness can be found in the smallest, closest places.

Quick Summary

If you've got a little kid who's learning to read or just loves picture books about feelings, "Smile!" is a sweet little find. The story follows a girl who wakes up and realizes her smile has gone missing, so she searches all over the house in the kitchen, under pillows, even in the bathtub to track it down. It's got this gentle humor that kids genuinely crack up at, especially when she checks silly places, and it works perfectly as a way to start conversations about emotions without being preachy. The short word count (only 560 words) makes it great for emerging readers who want something they can actually finish on their own, or for a quick bedtime read-aloud when you don't have a lot of time. Parents often mention that kids start looking for their own "missing smiles" after reading it, which can be a cute entry point for checking in on how they're feeling. It's similar in spirit to "The Way I Feel" by Anca Dinu Radu, another feelings-focused picture book that kids enjoy, though "Smile!" has more of an adventure/mystery vibe with the search. At an AR level of 2.7, it's right in the sweet spot for kindergarten through early second grade, and the 0.5 point value means it's a fast, satisfying read that builds confidence.
