Description

Kelcey is ready to quit the school basketball team. A mysterious figure named Dr. C shows up at her school to run a basketball clinic, claiming he can fix any player's problems. Kelcey is skeptical, thinking that a doctor can't cure her lack of love for the game. She must decide whether to give the clinic a chance or walk away for good.

Quick Summary

For kids who've lost interest in something they used to love maybe a sport, an instrument, whatever "Hoop Doctor" hits pretty close to home. Kelsey used to live for basketball, but now she dreads even shooting hoops, and when a shady character called Dr. C shows up at her school promising to "fix" her basketball problems, she's skeptical that some weird doctor can fix what's really a confidence thing. The book is only about 5,000 words, which makes it a solid choice for reluctant readers or kids who want something they can actually finish in one or two sittings, and the mystery around Dr. C (is he for real? what's his deal?) keeps things moving even when the story gets quieter. There's some light humor mixed with a genuinely relatable message about pushing through when you feel like you've lost your spark, and while there's a hint of the spooky with Dr. C's weird clinic, it's more goofy-suspenseful than actually scary. Fans of books like "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" or the "The Bad Guys" series will probably dig the balance of humor and heart here, and it's short enough that even kids who say they don't like reading might actually stick with it.
