Quick Summary
If your kid likes adventure stories with a side of goofy humor, this one's a fun pick. Set in a world trapped in endless winter, Rufus and his family are fighting to keep their home while his sister Madeline goes off on a money-making scheme with a questionable adventurer so there's actually two stories happening at once, which keeps things moving. The villain, Bartholomew Tullock, is delightfully scheming without being too scary, and the whole thing has this quirky, slightly absurd vibe that reminds me a lot of the Artemis Fowl series in how it balances clever plotting with silly moments. The characters feel real there's bickering siblings, a mom who's tougher than she looks, and plenty of mishaps along the way. It's a solid choice for middle graders who want something lighter but still substantial enough to sink their teeth into. One heads-up: there are some tense moments with the villain and some mild peril, but nothing too heavy it's more exciting than frightening. If your reader devoured something like The Wild Robot and wants their next adventure, this fits that same sweet spot of funny, heartfelt, and page-turning.
