Description

Halfdan Hroriksson is determined to avenge his brother's murder, but to do so he must first become a skilled Viking warrior. After gaining passage on a raiding ship, he learns the ways of battle, proves himself in clashes with rival nations, and earns a reputation among the crew while also taking a wealthy prisoner whose fate becomes tangled in his plans. As his strength and experience grow, Halfdan faces the moral toll of his relentless quest for vengeance, questioning the cost of the blood he spills.

Quick Summary

Halfdan's journey from a nervous trainee to a battle-hardened Viking is packed with gritty fight scenes and the kind of internal wrestling that makes you think about what it really means to be a warrior. The story crackles with the clash of swords, the weight of loyalty, and the occasional moment of humor that lightens the tension, making it a solid pick for readers who love fast-paced historical adventure. Fans of Nancy Farmer's Sea of Trolls will notice a similar mix of mythic world-building and real-world moral dilemmas, but this one leans more into the raw, blood-soaked side of Viking life. Parents should know there are a few scenes with romantic tension and mild sexual references, so it's best for older middle-graders who can handle a bit of grit. Even though it's the third book in the series, it gives enough context that new readers can follow, though you'll get extra depth if you start from the first one. The book works well for kids who enjoy action, history, and stories that ask hard questions about identity and revenge.
