"Champions on the Bench: The Cannon Street YMCA All-Stars" tells the story of the 1955 Cannon Street YMCA Little League All-Stars, a team of young Black baseball players from Charleston, South Carolina. When the white teams in the tournament refused to play against them, the Cannon Street All-Stars were barred from competition and forced to watch from the bench while other teams played. The book depicts this act of discrimination against the young athletes during the era of segregation in American baseball.
