Description

In the City of Trees, an unseasonal cold snap has turned spring into endless blizzards, and the townspeople blame the magical Karmidee for the curse. Otto Hush, a young Karmidee boy whose father is the king, sets out to discover the true cause of the freezing spell. On his journey he allies with the mysterious Wool Bandits, a tiny family harboring a dangerous secret, and the legendary Bird Charmers, each of whom may hold the key to restoring the city's climate. As Otto uncovers the strange connections among these groups, he must decide whether he can heal the rift between the Normals and the Karmidee before the cold consumes the city forever.

Quick Summary

If your kid loves fantasy worlds with quirky magic and lots of puzzle-solving, this one's a winner. Otto's a prince who finds himself tangled up in some seriously weird stuff going on in his kingdom thieves, tiny people, and weather that just won't warm up and the fun is watching him figure out how it's all connected. The humor is warm and sometimes a little silly, which makes the slightly tense moments feel exciting rather than scary. I found the miniature people subplot especially charming, and there's enough mystery threaded throughout to keep readers turning pages. This would be perfect for kids who enjoyed books like "The Wild Robot" or anything by Jessica Kindom, especially if they like their fantasy with a side of brain-teaser logic. Parents will appreciate that it's wholesome without being preachy, and there's real heart in Otto's relationships with the people around him. At around 71,000 words it's a solid middle-grade length that won't intimidate confident readers but still feels like a satisfying, meaty story.
