Description

When Ellen Fremedon decides to write a novel one summer, she looks no further than her own small town of Partridge Cove. The town is full of eccentric figures Larry the librarian, who lets her photocopy her sneakers, and gruff shopkeeper Mr. Floyd, who greets every customer with a jab. At home she deals with her philosopher father, her mother battling multiple sclerosis, mischievous twins, an opinionated grandmother, and her grandmother's charming boyfriend. With the help of her friend Jenny, Ellen discovers that the everyday drama, hidden secrets, and quirky personalities around her provide all the mystery and intrigue she needs for her story.

Quick Summary

If you've ever thought about writing a story based on the weird stuff happening around you, this book gets that feeling perfectly. Ellen is a middle schooler who decides to channel all the quirky characters and strange little mysteries in her small beach town into writing an actual novel and honestly, that's such a relatable thing for kids who love to daydream. With her friend Jenny by her side, she starts noticing that Partridge Cove is way more interesting than she ever gave it credit for, full of neighbors who probably have secrets they'd rather keep quiet about. It's a fun, low-stakes mystery that moves at a pace younger middle graders can really sink into, and the humor keeps things light even when the girls stumble onto something a little more puzzling than expected. This would be a great pick for kids who liked "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" or anyone who enjoys stories where ordinary kids stumble into adventures right in their own backyard. Parents will appreciate that it's wholesome, quick-moving, and celebrates imagination and friendship without getting too heavy or dark. At around 41,000 words with a 5.4 reading level, it's a solid next step for readers who are ready to move beyond early chapter books but still want something accessible and entertaining.
