Description

In this story, three members of the Saddle Club Stevie, Lisa, and Carole take part in a reenactment of the historic Oregon Trail, traveling west in a covered wagon. Stevie is tasked with driving the wagon and must also wear a dress, which creates an unexpected challenge. Lisa faces a particularly stubborn cow that refuses to cooperate, and Carole finds the long days in the saddle more tiring than she expected. Together they must work through these problems while learning what life was like for pioneers on the prairie.

Quick Summary

Ever wonder what it was like to eat, sleep, and survive while crossing the country in a rickety wagon? This short, fast-moving read drops you right into the pioneers' shoes with real-life snippets like how they cooked meals on an open fire and what to do when a storm rolled in. It's perfect for kids who love hands-on history, especially those who like to imagine the daily challenges of building a new life, and the short chapters make it a great choice for reluctant readers who might get intimidated by longer books. There are a few tense moments (like when the oxen get spooked or a sudden river crossing) but nothing too scary, and the whole tone stays hopeful and adventurous. If you've ever read "If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon," you'll notice a similar feel, but this one's even quicker to finish and packed with colorful anecdotes. It's a quick, lively way to get a taste of westward travel without wading through a heavy textbook.
