Description

Emma and her adopted brother Max both want a pet, but Emma's allergy to fur rules out cats and dogs. They decide to try a lizard, which won't cause allergic reactions, but Max is uncertain about having a scaly pet. As the siblings learn to care for their unusual companion, they must prove to Max that a strange pet can be a good friend. The story shows how Emma and Max work together, compromise, and discover that pets don't have to be furry.

Quick Summary

"Emma's Strange Pet" is a sweet early reader about a girl named Emma who can't have furry pets because of her allergies, so she and her adopted brother take a fun plunge into the world of reptiles with a lizard. Kids who are animal lovers especially those curious about exotic pets will get a kick out of watching the siblings figure out how to care for their scaly friend while dealing with the typical early-reader mishaps that make the story feel real and accessible. Parents will appreciate that it normalizes allergy struggles, showcases a positive adopted sibling relationship, and subtly teaches about responsibility without being preachy. The short chapters and simple vocabulary make it ideal for newly independent readers, and the warmth between the characters gives it that cozy feeling you want for bedtime stories. If your child loved "Frog and Toad Are Friends," they'll likely connect with this one's similar gentle humor and friendship themes just with a lizard twist instead.
