Description

Hectate "Heckie" Tenbury-Smith, a recent graduate of a school for good witches, can change people into animals and conjure new creatures with a wave of her wand. Determined to put her powers to good use, she teams up with a local boy named Daniel to turn misbehaving adults into beasts such as the harsh owner of a nursing home into a warthog. When Heckie falls for the charming but scheming Lionel Knacksap, Daniel must uncover his underhanded plans and protect his friend from a broken heart. As the duo navigates magical mischief and budding romance, they must decide where the line between justice and personal desire truly lies.

Quick Summary

If you're looking for a witch story that's actually sweet and funny rather than scary, Heckie is the perfect character to meet. She doesn't want to be your typical spooky witch she'd rather use her special power of turning people into animals to help solve problems and do good deeds. The humor throughout is the kind that kids actually laugh at (not the kind adults think is funny), and there's a genuine heart underneath all the silliness that makes it work for family reading time too. Kids who enjoyed books like Roald Dahl's "The Witches" but found that one a bit too dark will find this to be a gentler, more hopeful alternative. Parents will appreciate that it teaches being true to yourself and using your unique talents to help others, without being preachy about it. It's one of those stories that stays with you because of its lovable main character and the way it proves that being different is actually a superpower.
