Description

This book describes the Allied landing on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, with an overview of events leading to that invasion as well as a description of its momentous effects on the war.

Quick Summary

If your kid is even slightly into WWII history, this is one of those books that makes a huge, complicated event feel totally doable. Sheehan walks you through why the Allies decided to attempt the biggest amphibious invasion in history, breaks down what the actual plan was, and then brings you right to the beaches of Normandy to see how it all went down. It's surprisingly thorough for such a short read, and the way it's written feels more like a good story than a textbook, which makes it work equally well for reluctant readers and history buffs alike. Parents can rest assured it's focused on strategy, significance, and the magnitude of the achievement rather than graphic details it's serious and respectful of the subject, but not gratuitous. The book does a really nice job of connecting D-Day to the bigger picture of the war, so kids come away actually understanding why this one day mattered so much. If you want more WWII content after this, Stephen Krusoe's "Inside the Earth" would be a good next step it's got that same straightforward, kid-friendly approach to history.
