Quick Summary
If your kid loves adventure stories with a dash of mystery and humor, "Bone Dry" is a solid pick. Matthew Morrissey tags along with his quirky mentor, Dr. ABC, on a camel caravan trek through the "Great Sand Sea" think ancient desert, sand dunes as far as the eye can see, and danger lurking around every ridge. There's something genuinely fun about the mentor-mentee dynamic here; Dr. ABC is eccentric enough to make you laugh while still being someone worth trusting, and Matthew has to grow up fast when things take a turn for the dangerous. The book balances excitement with just enough mystery to keep pages turning, and it's got that classic middle-grade vibe where kids get to be brave without it feeling contrived. Parents will appreciate that it moves at a good pace (around 40,000 words) and isn't too heavy or dark it's thrilling, sure, but it's the kind of scary that's fun, not traumatic. Kids who enjoyed Gary Paulsen's survival adventures or stories like "The Egypt Game" will probably dig this one. It's a quick read at an AR 5.1, so it works well for kids in 4th through 8th grade who want something exciting but not overwhelming.
