Description

Charlie, an appaloosa horse, narrates his life with Chief Cochise. After the chief is bitten by a rattlesnake, Charlie races to rescue his rider, risking his own safety. Later, Charlie watches as the Chiricahua Apache leaders and white men negotiate a treaty, giving a child-friendly view of a historic moment.

Quick Summary

Charlie, the appaloosa horse who narrates his own story, lives with Chief Cochise and finds himself in the middle of a life-or-death moment when a snake strikes his boss. After a frantic sprint through the desert, he manages to get help just in time, and his quick thinking saves the chief's life. The story then follows Charlie as he watches the tense negotiations between the Chiricahua Apaches and the white settlers, giving kids a kid-friendly glimpse of a pivotal treaty without heavy politics. It's perfect for animal lovers especially those who adore stories where a brave horse gets to be the hero and also works for kids who are curious about Native American history but might shy away from denser texts. Parents will appreciate that the book mixes a little adventure with a lot of heart, and the tension never gets too scary just enough to keep young readers on the edge of their seats. If you liked "The One and Only Ivan" for its animal narrator, you'll find the same gentle humor and surprising insight in Charlie's tale.
