Description

When Andrea and her little brother Tony return to Moose Jaw, they are drawn back into the city's mysterious tunnels, where a theft ring of surprising criminals has set up operations. To protect the town, the siblings must unravel the secrets of the past and outwit the thieves before they escape with their loot. This middle-grade adventure blends suspenseful mystery with the thrill of secret passageways.

Quick Summary

If your kid likes adventure stories with a historical twist, this one's worth grabbing. Andrea's been stuck in Moose Jaw's creepy tunnels once before and has zero interest in going back but her little brother Tony drags her right back in, and suddenly they're hurtling into the past where they run into a gang of thieves and find themselves in real danger. The fact that the tunnels are based on actual historical passages in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan gives the story a fun grounding that makes the scary parts feel more tangible, and the sibling squabbling between Andrea and Tony feels authentic without being annoying. It's got just enough tension to keep pages turning without crossing into nightmare territory, which makes it a solid choice for middle graders who want something exciting but not too intense. Kids who enjoyed books like "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" or other underground adventure stories will likely find a lot to love here. It's a quick enough read for its level that reluctant readers can feel accomplished finishing it, while the time-travel element gives enough substance for kids who like to think about "what if" scenarios.
