Description

After laying her nest of many eggs deep in the sand along a Florida beach, a female loggerhead sea turtle returns to the ocean. This begins the hatchling turtles' arduous journey to survival.

Quick Summary

If your kid's into marine life or wildlife survival stories, this one's a quick and satisfying pick only about 2,800 words, so even reluctant readers can blast through it without feeling overwhelmed. Harms follows a group of loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings from the moment they break out of their nest on a Florida beach to their tense scramble toward the ocean, and let's just say nature doesn't make it easy for them. It strikes a nice balance between being genuinely educational (kids will learn about predator threats, the importance of timing, and how confusing artificial lights can be for baby turtles) while still feeling like an adventure with real stakes. What I like is that it's not sugarcoated young readers get a real sense of how tough survival is for these little guys, which makes it feel more meaningful than a typical "animals are cute" picture book. If your kid enjoyed something like "Seabird in the Land of the Sun" or any nature documentary-style story, they'd probably gravitate toward this one. Parents should know it's focused and simple enough for younger middle graders but has enough tension to keep older kids interested too perfect for a classroom read-aloud or a beach trip when you want something thematic without being too heavy.
