Description

Yash is the best athlete at Robinette Middle School, good enough to play on the high school JV team, so he's stunned when he fails to earn his eighth-grade PE credit and must attend summer school to graduate. Forced into a remedial class nicknamed "Slugfest," he bands together with other PE rejects to train as a team. Now Yash must figure out how to lead a group of unlikely underdogs while fighting to keep his spot on the football team. Korman delivers another comedic underdog story about a group of middle schoolers who discover there's more to sports than natural talent.

Quick Summary

If you're looking for a funny, fast-paced story that mixes sports drama with goofy misadventures, this one's for you. Yash, a budding football star, ends up stuck in a summer-school PE class called "Slugfest" and rounds up a ragtag crew of fellow gym-reject kids to help him earn his spot on the JV team. The result is a series of absurd training stunts, sarcastic banter, and surprisingly heartfelt moments as the group learns to work together despite their differences. The humor feels like a typical middle-school locker-room joke, but there are also scenes of bullying, a few mild scuffles, and a brief, unsettling reference to animal cruelty that might give a parent a pause. Kids who love a good laugh, enjoy school-sports stories, or are fans of Korman's other works like "The Unteachables" will find plenty to like. It's a quick, enjoyable read that balances goofy fun with a few real-world stakes, making it a solid choice for readers who want something light but still a bit daring.
