Description
Leila Wayward is a little witch who's a whiz at every magical skill flying, conjuring, shape-shifting but she's hopeless in the kitchen. When she decides to enter the Magnificent Witchy Cake-off, she quickly learns that a perfect cake is harder to conjure than a spell. Though her family is famed for its pastry mastery, Leila's attempts end in disaster. With the help of her three magical sisters, she discovers their secret recipes and finds that teamwork can turn a kitchen catastrophe into something magical.
Quick Summary
Leila is the kind of character kids immediately root for she's got big ambitions, works super hard, and genuinely wants to win this trophy more than anything. The story has this wonderful mix of witchy magic and real kid feelings, so it hits that sweet spot of being silly enough to make kids laugh but also touching enough to give them something to think about. Young readers who love stories about friendship, trying your best, and maybe a little bit of magic will get a kick out of this one. The book is short enough that newly independent readers can power through it and feel totally proud of themselves, but it's got enough charm that adults will actually enjoy reading it aloud too. If your kid loved "Beverly Cleary's Ramona" or books about underdogs with big dreams, they'll probably ask for this one again and again.
