Description

Atlatl, a boy injured as a child, rescues a sabertooth cub from a dire wolf and brings it back to his clan. His decision sets off a clash between his longing for his father's respect and the clan's strict customs, culminating in his banishment. Part survival tale, part animal-human friendship, and part redemption story, the novel follows Atlatl as he struggles to survive the harsh prehistoric wilderness while confronting the consequences of his choice.

Quick Summary

Set in an ice-age world where fire and stone tools are the only tech, Clan drops you into a tribe where a daring boy named Atlatl rescues a baby saber-toothed cat from a dire wolf and brings it back to his people. The story quickly escalates from a heart-warming animal rescue to a tense test of loyalty, because the clan's laws are strict, and bringing a dangerous predator into the camp puts Atlatl on a collision course with the elders. You'll feel the rush of the chase, the quiet moments of watching the cub grow, and the gut-wrenching consequences when the tribe decides the only way to keep everyone safe is to banish him forever a punishment that hits even harder because the book touches on the pain of feeling like you have nowhere left to turn. Kids who love survival tales, animal friendships, or stories about kids who have to break the rules for the right reasons will find a lot to love here, and the prose is straightforward enough that even a reluctant fifth-grader can power through. Parents should know the story deals with a suicide theme in a thoughtful, non-graphic way, so it's a good conversation starter for families who want to talk about loneliness and belonging. If you've ever read something like "The Lightning Thief" or "Wolf Brother" and wanted a prehistoric twist, Clan gives you that same mix of adventure and emotional stakes.
