Description

During the Korean War, young Navy diver Fergus Frew and his fellow "frogmen" face dangerous missions that go far beyond scouting mudflats. From planting mines to sabotaging tunnels and bridges, the demolitions team undertakes risky operations behind enemy lines. When the enemy begins placing their own mines, it falls to Fergus to uncover their locations a painstaking and life-threatening task. As the war intensifies, the work of a minesweeper becomes increasingly crucial and perilous.

Quick Summary

If you're looking for historical fiction that really puts you in the thick of things, this one is set during the Korean War and follows a Navy diver named Fergus who thought he knew what he was signing up for but the reality of the job turns out to be way more intense than expected. Lynch does a fantastic job of making you feel like you're right there with him and his squad, dealing with dangerous underwater work and the constant tension of not knowing what could go wrong. The book strikes a good balance between the scary, tense moments and the camaraderie and humor that develop between the guys, which makes the characters feel real and relatable rather than just stock military figures. Kids who love stories about real-world challenges, friendship under pressure, or who have read other war fiction like The Red Badge of Courage will probably really connect with this one. Parents should know there's some pretty vivid danger and the stakes feel genuinely high throughout, but it's not gratuitously violent it's more about the psychological weight of the work than anything else. It's a solid pick for readers who want something with real substance and a lot of heart.
