Quick Summary

Katherine Rundell has a gift for writing books that feel like pure adventure from the very first page, and "Impossible Creatures" is no exception it's the kind of story where a regular kid stumbles into a world where phoenixes, griffins, and other mythical beasts actually exist, and the whole thing just zips along at a pace that keeps you turning pages. Kids who love animals, fantasy worlds, or stories where the underdog gets to be the hero will find plenty to love here, and the witty, slightly mischievous tone makes it a great pick for readers who might be a bit reluctant to pick up a longer book. There's a killer on the loose hunting the main character, a girl named (I need to use the actual name - it's "Spiral"), and the two kids end up racing against time to figure out why the creatures are dying, which gives the story real stakes without getting too dark. Parents should know there's some mild violence and a few genuinely tense moments, but it's balanced with humor and heart in a way that feels age-appropriate for the middle grades crowd. If your kid enjoyed Roald Dahl's playful inventiveness or books like "The Wild Robot" that mix adventure with real emotion, this one will probably hit the spot.
