Description

Set in a French school where her father serves as principal, Sylvie grows up in an apartment tucked at the end of a hallway of classrooms. As a child, she and her brother explore this unusual kingdom, discovering small mysteries and quirky surprises, but the teenage years bring more complicated challenges parental conflict, shifting friendships, and the isolation of being the only Jewish family in town. The graphic memoir follows her as she develops her artistic voice and carves out her own path despite the expectations around her.

Quick Summary

"Sylvie" is this really charming graphic memoir that follows a young girl discovering her love for art and figuring out who she is outside of what everyone expects from her. The illustrations are simple but full of personality, and the whole thing reads like you're flipping through someone's really funny sketchbook diary. If you've got a kid who loves drawing, loves humor, or just stories about kids being their own weird selves, they'll probably devour this in no time and honestly, even reluctant readers tend to get pulled in by the pictures. There's this great balance of silly moments and some surprisingly tender stuff about following your own path, which makes it work for kids who just want something fun or readers looking for a little more heart. It kind of reminds me of "El Deafo" or "Smile" if you've read those same graphic memoir vibe but with its own unique flavor. Parents won't find anything tricky here; it's just a sweet, quick story about growing up and doing your own thing.
