Description

Thirteen-year-old Eva Chen is a figure skater with a crucial showcase performance approaching, but everything goes wrong when she suffers a concussion during practice. As she struggles to recover and prepare for the big event, she also faces cruel bullying from some of the other girls about her Chinese heritage. Eva must find the courage to stand up for herself and perform despite the obstacles in her way.

Quick Summary

When thirteen-year-old Eva takes a hard fall during a tricky figure-skating jump, her world flips upside down as she must deal with a concussion, a lengthy recovery, and a group of bullies on her team. Kids who love sports especially skating will get a quick, punchy story that feels like a locker-room pep talk, while anyone who's ever felt pressure from peers will see a bit of themselves in Eva's struggle. The book handles concussion safety seriously, giving parents a chance to talk about head injuries, yet keeps the tone hopeful and even includes some light-hearted moments with Eva's teammates. Readers watch Eva work with a supportive coach, find creative ways to stay involved on the ice even when she can't skate, and gradually reclaim her confidence. Fans of other Jake Maddox sports books like "Soccer Switch" will notice the same fast-paced, easy-to-read style, but this one adds a personal layer of emotional resilience. If you're looking for a short, uplifting read that shows courage can be messy and uncomfortable, but totally worth it, this book fits the bill.
