Description

The Tale of Willie Monroe by Alan Schroeder is an adaptation of a Japanese folktale, set in the American South. The story follows Willie Monroe, a powerful wrestler who believes he is the strongest critter in all of Tennessee and hopes to win the Emperor's Wrestling Match. He encounters three exceptionally strong women Delilah and her Granny who train him for success and teach him he has much to learn. The book combines elements of folklore with Southern settings and characters.

Quick Summary

Willie Monroe boasts he's the strongest critter in all of Tennessee, but his big ego meets its match when a clever girl named Delilah and her wise Granny step up to prove that strength comes in many forms. Kids will giggle at Willie's ridiculous bragging and cheer when Delilah outsmarts him with brains instead of brawn. If your kid loves "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" or "The Stinky Cheese Man," they'll adore this laugh-out-loud tale of a character who gets hilariously put in his place. This 4.2 AR level story is ideal for kindergarten through third graders who enjoy stories with humor, heart, and a satisfying lesson about humility.
