Description

Set in 1808, the novel follows Grace, a young convict girl starting over as a servant in a bark hut on a riverbank. Though she works hard, she constantly falls short in her master's eyes, especially when it involves caring for his beloved horse, Glory. When her master leaves her in charge, Grace must find the courage to protect the horse from a looming threat. This adventure, the third in a four-book series, continues Grace's journey toward redemption.

Quick Summary

For readers who already love Grace, this third book picks up with her starting over at a new home a rustic bark hut beside a river and it's a satisfying continuation of her story. The central conflict really revolves around her attempts to prove herself to her strict master, but it keeps getting tangled up with Glory, his treasured horse, which creates some really tense moments that kids will feel invested in. It has that classic historical fiction feel without being heavy-handed, perfect for kids who like stories about determination and finding your place. Since it's a shorter book at around 16,000 words, reluctant readers or kids who want something they can finish quickly will find it accessible. If your kiddo has followed Grace's earlier adventures, they'll appreciate seeing her character tested in a new way, and if they haven't, this could still work as a standalone introduction. Parents can feel good about the wholesome themes of perseverance and learning to understand someone different from yourself, though there are some moments where Grace really struggles and feels discouraged. Fans of the "American Girl" historical books or anyone who enjoys stories with animals at the heart of the conflict will likely gravitate toward this one.
